The International English Language Testing System
The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, as it is popularly called, is an English Language proficiency test that is required to be taken by non-native students so as to study in countries where the medium of instruction is English. IELTS is accepted by Universities in UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It has become a mandatory test for study in Australia. One cannot be granted an Australian Student Visa without an IELTS Score. All other study destinations require one to appear for either the TOEFL or the IELTS. The IELTS tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Academic Reading test comprises of 40 questions, which are to be solved within 60 minutes. All together there are 3 passages and on an average there will be 11 to 12 questions in each passage, with the allotment of 20 minutes time for each passage. All the passages are of same difficulty level and the length will be of approximately 800-900 words.
General Training Reading test comprises of 40 questions, which are to be solved within 60 minutes. All together there are 3 sections and on an average there will be 7 to 8 questions in each sub-section of section 1 &2, and around 11 to 12 questions in section 3. The content of the sections will be in relevance to some factual texts like adverts or work related issues.
In Writing module, there will be Task 1 and Task 2. The test time for writing module is 60 minutes where one has to spend 20 minutes on WT1 and 40 minutes on WT2. In WT1, there will be Report Writing for Academic student in which data will be provided in the form of Pie chart, Bar graph, Tabular data, Line graph, Map and Pictorial data whereas Letter Writing for General Training candidate in which there will be 3 types of letter i.e. Formal , Informal and semi-formal whilst.
Writing Task 2 is Essay Writing, which is same for Academic and General Training students which covers debatable questions, argumentary topics, Current affairs, Opinion based question etcetera.
Listening module consists of 40 questions, where one has to listen to the conversation for 30 minutes and later the student will get 10 minutes to transfer the answers on the answer sheet.
In listening module, 40 questions are divided into 4 parts and there will be 10 questions in each section. Moreover, the conversations will be based on booking arrangements, student services, research projects, university lectures and many more.
In Speaking Module, there will be one to one interaction with the examiner for 11-14 minutes. There are 3 parts in the speaking test, where 1st part is about the personal interview questions and other general questions related to any topic, in 2nd part, a cue card means a topic is given to the candidate on which one has to speak for 90-120 seconds after the completion of preparation time of 60 seconds, and in the last part, follow up questions related to the cue card will be asked from the candidate.
